Fishing rod jewel thief's heist

Police have arrested a man over a bizarre jewellery store burglary involving a fishing rod in Melbourne.

Detectives today executed a search warrant at a Melton West address where a 43-year-old was arrested.

He is expected to be charged with theft and burglary offences.

The man is currently in custody and assisting police.

Detectives were left reeling when the persistent burglar used a fishing rod to allegedly steal a piece of costume jewellery off a fashion mannequin in the Le Style boutique window.

The gold necklace from the iconic Italian fashion brand is worth $799 and features the iconic medusa head, a Greek mythological figure.

Detective Senior Constable Bede Whitty said the man had “definitely thought out” the “unusual” robbery at the Little Collins St store on February 24 about 3am.

“It was fairly blatant, quite bold to have someone attend with a fishing rod in the middle of the night,” Det Whitty said.

“The gold colour, the quality of the item, caught his eye.

“It was well organised.”

CCTV footage captured the fishy man breaking the shop’s window and attempting to reel the necklace with a small rod.

Unsuccessful, he later returns with a second, larger rod, in order to land his catch.

The man was lurking around the shop for close to three hours.

Disappointed shop owned Steven Adigrati said it was a “pretty outrageous” robbery.

“This necklace looks a lot more expensive than what it is worth,” Mr Adigrati said.
