Brutal jailhouse footage has emerged of a criminal being attacked in the state’s biggest maximum security jail.
Video of the vicious ambush – purportedly linked to the notorious Prisoners of War gang – shows a scene of extreme violence played out in front of a seemingly blase audience.
It starts with a strongly built shirtless inmate being confronted by two others wearing white T-shirts on an upstairs walkway.
The victim, who appears able to look after himself, shapes up and briefly repels his foes with punches.
But he is gradually overcome, taking repeated strikes and winding up cornered and bloodied.
As the violence unfolds, other inmates look on, one calmly juggling a footy and another chatting on the unit’s phone.
Staff move cautiously towards the altercation at one point but then elect to retreat.
Other officers, who appear to be from a specialist response unit, move in on the group soon after.
As the victim lies slumped on the deck, his attackers walk away appearing to congratulate one another.
One of them bears bloodstains on his shirt.
Meanwhile, vision from another angle shows the victim being stretchered away by ambulance officers.
Sources have told the Herald Sun he was slashed and stabbed, leaving injuries which required hundreds of stitches.
