A prison officer stabbed 11 times may have been ambushed because his attacker wanted to join a violent jail gang.
The Herald Sun has been told one theory for the senseless onslaught is that the thug wanted to join a gang known as Gfam.
The victim is recovering from nasty injuries suffered at privately run Port Phillip Prison on Tuesday afternoon.
Gfam has steadily increased its influence in the state’s prison system in recent years.
It is unclear how many members Gfam has but an entry requirement for those wanting to join is that they attack a staff member.
The man who wielded the shiv in Wednesday’s brutal ambush is a relatively low-level offender.
He has been transferred from the western suburbs prison to another maximum security jail.
Police have been called in to investigate the attack, which happened in Port Phillip’s Scarborough South unit.
It is not known whether the makeshift knife has been recovered.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said a prison officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries after an incident with a prisoner.
“The prison officer was treated on scene before being taken to hospital as a precaution,” the spokeswoman.
“The department is committed to the safety and security of all of its staff and prisoners, and takes any assault very seriously.”
The prison officer was stabbed repeatedly at the Truganina prison on Tuesday, and it is believed he was able to somehow make his own way to the jail’s medical facilities.
