The family of Luke Price, who died after allegedly being mowed down on a dark road near Lang Lang by Bradley McStay, became emotional when they faced the accused killer.

The grieving family of a parolee allegedly mowed down on a dark road has faced his alleged killer in court, scoffing when he asked if he could be freed on bail.

Price, 34, died after being struck by a Holden Colorado ute on Heads Rd in Yannathan, near Lang Lang, 85km southeast of Melbourne, about midnight on Monday night.

Police allege Mr McStay deliberately drove at Price, dragging him under the car for 200m.

His death came two days after police sent out an alert saying Price was wanted for breaching his parole.

Emotions ran high as McStay entered the court dock, arms crossed and confused about the court process.

When asked by the magistrate if he understood what was going on, Mr McStay said: “Not really, no.”

The father of two said he had not been able to make contact with his lawyer.

“So, I can’t apply for bail?” Mr McStay asked.

“I need to plead my case, and apply for bail.”

The magistrate indicated he was not able to apply to be released today in what was simply a “procedural hearing”.

When he later asked the magistrate again “How do I apply for bail?” one woman with the alleged victim’s family said: “Are you serious?”.

No details surrounding the circumstances and possible motive behind the alleged murder were aired in court.

The court heard investigators needed more time to prepare the case against Mr McStay, including a crash reconstruction.

Mr McStay was remanded to reappear on June 17.

Outside court, Price’s family did not wish to comment.
