Two innocent victims were chased by offenders armed with machetes during a terrifying alleged carjacking attempt in broad daylight in Melbourne’s west.
Detectives have been told a vehicle deliberately smashed into a Toyota Kluger at the roundabout at the intersection of Hogans and Derrimut roads in Hoppers Crossing on Wednesday evening.
Police say the two people inside the Kluger fled their vehicle fearing they had become targets of a dangerous armed carjacking about 6.45pm.
One of those victims is believed to have fled to the nearby Red Rooster as one of the offenders gave chase.
The alleged offender is said to have attempted to slash the victim with a large knife as they hid inside the restaurant, in yet another frightening incident involving knife crime.
The Herald Sun understands another victim, who was not in the Kluger, was also allegedly targeted by the armed crew simultaneously.
Witnesses say one of the men from the offending vehicle, who was armed with a machete, chased the innocent young woman into the carpark of the Equip Church on Hogans Rd.
The witness claimed the group of six offenders were attempting to open several car doors nearby in an attempt to steal them.
The victim’s friend, who was in the church when she rushed inside after being chased, said “she’s all good now”.
“She told us that she saw the people get out of the car, try to get into the other car and the ones around them, banging on windows and chasing people,” her friend told the Herald Sun.
“Then she saw one of the guys running down the path behind her so she ran into the church.
“She’s all good now.”
The witness claimed he attempted to hit the offenders with his car in a bid to save the innocent woman, who is in her early 20s.
“I tried my best to stop him but had my daughter in the car with me who was very scared also,” he wrote online.
“These pigs tried to get into every car around them after they crashed.
“I did try to run him over to stop him getting to her .. it’s not right but better than her getting attacked.
“There were six of them all carrying weapons.”
The group of offenders took off in the initial victim’s Toyota Kluger.
No one was physically injured in the attacks.
Westgate Divisional Response Unit detectives are investigating.
