Yarra City councillor and Australian Greens member Anab Mohamud, 35, has vowed to fight allegations assaulting a trans woman outside a South Yarra nightclub in court.

An inner-city Greens councillor accused of bashing a trans woman outside a South Yarra nightclub will contest the allegations in court next year.

Anab Mohamud, 34, is facing a series of charges including unlawful assault, public drunkenness and offensive behaviour in relation to an alleged fight with a woman outside Chasers Nightclub, near Chapel St on April 11.

Police allege a verbal altercation between the councillor and the woman in the early hours of the Sunday morning escalated into a physical fight outside the nightclub which hosts the popular LGBTQ club night, Poof Doof.

Ms Mohamud allegedly yelled “f--k the LG family” and “I swear to Allah if I lose my eye I will make sure all these faggots die”.

The Yarra City councillor and member of the Australian Greens also suffered facial and eye injuries during the alleged street brawl on Bray St.

She did not appear when her case was called for the first time in a virtual Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

But her lawyer, Alana Reader, told the hearing the case had failed to resolve during discussions with police prosecutors.

“The matter has been case conferenced, it has not resolved and the parties consent to proceed to contest mention,” Ms Reader said.

Ms Mohamud will now face a contest mention in April where her defence to the charges is likely to be revealed.

A second woman was also charged over the alleged nightclub assault with her case last month adjourned to January 11.

St Kilda woman Al Shaba Bin Taha, 30, faces charges of affray and recklessly cause injury.

It is not known if Ms Taha and Ms Mohamud knew each other.

In July, Ms Mohamud announced she would be taking extended medical leave from her role at Yarra City Council.

“On advice from my doctor, to aid in my recovery, I have decided to take medical leave without pay until later in the year,” she said in a statement.

It followed a fiery council meeting during which she fought off a no-confidence motion requesting her to take a leave of absence until her legal matters were finalised.

The motion was voted down by Greens councillors 4-3.

Ms Mohamud, who wore sunglasses during the July 20 online meeting and appeared agitated at times, said: “If it was up to me I would love to talk about everything.”

“But I respect the law and I respect that justice will take its course, and so should we all.”

Ms Mohamud is on summons and will return to court on April 26.
