Wantirna College teacher Azar Rahmatzadeh faces eight charges relating to a child under 16

A teacher charged with child sex offences has had her bid for legal aid denied and is selling her house to fund her defence.

A Wantirna College teacher charged with child sex offences is selling her house to pay for legal fees as a court heard her lawyer was preparing to “resolve” the case.

Azar Rahmatzadeh, 44, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday where she faced eight charges relating to a child under 16.

Seven of those charges were alleged to have occurred in Croydon on a single day in January this year, including four counts of sexual penetration, two counts of intentional sexual touching and one count of supplying liquor to a minor.

Ms Rahmatzadeh has also been charged with communicating with a child with the intention of committing a sexual offence at Croydon and Wantirna, between January 2021 to January 2022.

Her lawyer Jessica Clarebrough told the court the suspended teacher’s bid for legal aid had not been accepted, and her defence would have to be privately funded.

Ms Clarebrough said she had “put her house on the market, there will be an auction in possibly four weeks and she’ll come into funds at that stage”.

The defence lawyer asked the court for a six-week adjournment while the house was being sold.

“It is anticipated that this matter will resolve,” she said.

Ms Rahmatzadeh, appearing for the online hearing with an array of what appeared to be education certificates framed and mounted on the wall behind her, remained silent besides confirming how to pronounce her name.

The matter was adjourned to September 9, where prosecutor Emma Fargher said she expected the case would “progress”.
