Two drivers have been caught clocking speeds of 200 km/h while driving on Melbourne’s highways overnight.

Police used stop sticks to arrest a Greenvale driver who was nabbed travelling at 233 km/h on the Princes Freeway in Laverton about 7.30pm.

Sticks were deployed on Kirkstone Rd in Point Cook after the driver was seen driving into oncoming traffic as he travelled towards the city. The 23-year old was arrested after police followed the vehicle into a dead-end parking area off Darsham Crescent.

“The driver stopped the vehicle and was arrested without further incident,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The man was charged with conduct endangering life, driving at dangerous speeds, and evading police. He received bail and will appear at Werribee Magistrates’ Court in February next year.

Another driver was caught travelling 200 km/h on the Monash Freeway in the early hours of Friday morning.

The 20-year-old Narre Warren South man was intercepted by police after the force’s Air Wing unit tracked a Holden station wagon allegedly travelling at dangerous speeds.

He was interviewed in relation to driving dangerously and is expected to be charged on summons. The vehicle was impounded with towing costs of $878.

The arrests come as police launch Operation Scoreboard, a statewide road policing effort to coincide with the AFL Grand Final long weekend.
