Two in custody after Richmond crash

Hawthorn champion Jordan Lewis has had his vehicle smashed up after two teenagers allegedly flipped their vehicle which crashed into the footy legend’s car.

Lewis’ luxury car was parked on Church St in Richmond before the pair of teenagers lost control of their vehicle, flipping and crashing into it.

They allegedly fled the scene before members of the public performed a citizen’s arrest at a nearby fast food joint.

The teenagers’ white Subaru remained on its side early on Friday afternoon.

Lewis told the Herald Sun he had just finished lunch nearby when he saw his car had been severely damaged.

“I was out for lunch and I came back and saw a car flipped up on the side of the road next to my car, which has obviously damaged my car,” he said.

“That’s about it, I was sort of lucky that I wasn’t there. They’ll tow it away somewhere and I’ll wait to hear from police.

“The axle looked like it had been snapped, the front axle … how your day takes a turn.”

Victoria Police said members of the public assisted in the arrests.

“It’s believed the vehicle rolled on Church Street around 1.30pm and the two male occupants ran from the scene,” a statement read.

“A number of members of the public followed the males and restrained them at a fast-food restaurant nearby until police arrived.

“One male has been transported to hospital and the other is currently being interviewed.”

Damian took part in the citizen’s arrest with his brother.

“My brother and I were here on Church St. We have a tile store here and were just having a chat out the front and we heard a loud bang out on the street,” he told 3AW’s Jacqui Felgate.

“We walked out and saw the white SUV flipped on its side. From there we thought it was a pretty bad accident and we saw two gentlemen jump out of the driver’s side and start running down Church St.

“My brother and I looked at each other and we knew exactly what was going on … and he said ‘let’s get them’.

“We set off heading north up Church St and we just tried to get close enough to see where they were going, we kept our distance of course.

“We made it all the way to KFC on Swan St and we managed to corner them in the drive through area.”

Damian said they chased the pair for more than a kilometre, and he was recruiting others to join the pursuit as well.

“Because we are a local business as we were running I was seeing people I knew and I was calling ‘give us a hand’ and they jumped in as well,” he said.

“We knew the more of us there was the safer it was going to be to make the arrest.

“We just got them to sit down and the cops came pretty quickly”

Damien said he believed the pair were only teens and under the influence.

“I estimated between 15 and 18,” he said. “They were (allegedly) drug affected.”

Carlton coach Michael Voss famously performed a heroic citizen’s arrest after a group of teenagers crashed a car in Hawthorn last year.

Voss was grabbing coffee when he saw the teenagers allegedly attempting to flee the scene before chasing them down.

Voss managed to hold one of the teenagers down until police arrived.

The triple-premiership Lion was later hailed a “true blue hero” before the boy detained was granted bail.
