Devastated friends, too distraught to speak with media, placed turned out the crash site to place tributes on the median strip, where just hours earlier the two boys lost their lives.

Messages of “forever young” and “taken too soon” were written on a placard as a bouquet of flowers was placed in the stripped bark of the tree which copped the brunt of the collision.

Superintendent Matthew Baynes said the death of the two boys was “a really clear example” of the “results” this type of offending could lead to.

“Inexperienced drivers, driving a stolen car in poor conditions, it’s a real recipe for disaster.”

“We are desperately looking for that vehicle and we’re looking through all avenues of inquiry to identify the people involved,” Mr Baynes said.
