Two people were killed in a harrowing smash in Caulfield South on Monday night with a car believed to have bolted through a red light before causing a thunderous collision.

Police were told a man drove a black BMW down North Rd at speed about 10:45pm, crashing into a silver sedan that had entered the intersection from Thomas St on a green light.

The black BMW struck the silver car with such force that it rolled about 60m down North Rd in the Nepean Hwy direction, leaving a traumatic scene on Tuesday morning.

Both occupants of the sedan, a man and a woman, tragically died at the scene. Their ages and identities were not immediately clear.

Both the driver and passenger of the BMW were taken to hospital with serious but non life threatening head injuries.

Police had not charged anyone over the deadly incident as of Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses reported hearing a car barreling down the road before a loud bang that was compared to a “jet engine” by one resident and “thunder” by another.

The horror crash occurred outside the Caulfield South fire station and firefighters immediately rushed to the scene.

About “30-40 people” came out of their homes in a bid to help, but were quick to realise the pair from the silver sedan could not be saved.

The driver and passenger from the black BMW were pulled from their car and lay on the footpath before being stretchered off by paramedics, according to North Rd resident and witness Ari Jain.

“It sounded like a jet engine taking off. Then there was a thud 3-4 seconds afterwards, it was really, really loud,” Mr Jain said.

“I didn’t think it was a car crash, but came out and saw a car flipped upside down and smoke. “A bunch of people from the fire station were on the scene trying to help. People were trying to attend to people in the car but you saw them give up when they realised they wouldn’t be able to remove them from the vehicle.”

Jason Burland, who lives right on the intersection on North Rd, said he heard loud revving and the sound of a car travelling at serious speed before the crash.

He said the collision was like thunder, causing his house to shake.

“I came outside, saw the car turned over and completely crushed,” Mr Burland said.

“It was quite traumatic. It’s the worst crash I’ve ever seen.”

Mr Burland said the intersection was dangerous and that speeding down North Rd was so common that he never reverses out of his driveway — instead always driving out facing forward — for fear of getting hit by a car barreling through.

Mr Jain’s mother Alka said she hoped the incident proved a “lesson to all those speeding”.

“I really feel sorry for the families. It has to be a lesson for everyone, because people on North Rd, they speed up and down crazily and beyond midnight,” Ms Jain said.

“There’s no point. It’s so sad when somebody’s lost a life.”
