Two cyclists mown down by car on Nepean Hwy in Carrum, rushed to hospital with serious injuries

A Dandenong man has been arrested and is expected to be charged after two cyclists were rammed from behind on the Nepean Highway and allegedly left for dead.

Carrum hit-run driver wanted by police

A first responder to a crash where two cyclists were mown down claims the driver got out of his car before fleeing the scene moments later.

A pair of cyclists were in hospital on Saturday evening with serious injuries after a car struck them from behind while on an early morning ride in Carrum.

The men were riding south on the Nepean Highway between McLeod and Eel Race roads when a vehicle rammed them from behind about 6.30am on Saturday.

The two victims, a 52-year-old Ormond man and a 48-year-old Glen Waverley man, were both pushed up onto the car’s bonnet.

They suffered serious injuries and were left for dead when the driver allegedly took off.

A 38-year-old Dandenong man was arrested and interviewed on Saturday night after a member of the public contacted police with information about the driver.

He was released pending summons and is expected to be charged with offences including reckless conduct endangering life.

First responder Craig Missell said he saw the driver of the grey Mazda 3 exit the car while the two injured men were laying on the road.

The Carrum resident rushed downstairs to assist but, by then, he alleges the driver had left.

“I heard a bang and heard some screaming. It was quite a desperate scream,” he told the Sunday Herald Sun.

“I could see someone getting out of the driver’s side door, I went downstairs and out the front and the car had driven off.

“There was one cyclist lying half on kerb and half on the road, and there was a second guy lying down on the inside lane.

“One of the bikes was absolutely mangled.”

Mr Missell said one of the pair seemed to have suffered catastrophic injuries, while his mate appeared to have been heavily concussed.

“He didn’t move for probably about 20 minutes, if either of them are more hurt, it’s probably him,” he added.

“The back of (the other cyclist’s) helmet was smashed, he said: ‘I just remember hitting the bonnet of the car’. A couple of minutes later, he couldn’t remember anything.

“He was repeating himself.”

Carrum resident Mitch said the sound of the smash was alarming.

He said the crash happened almost right outside his driveway.

“It woke me up,” he said.

“My son got up and rushed out to help. I just thought it was a bit of commotion from the neighbours, not on the highway.”

He said two separate serious collisions had occurred just metres away in recent times.

A man was killed after his car ploughed through a nearby fence just months ago and another man was seriously injured after he slammed into a power pole nearby.

“The amount of accidents along here is unreal,” he added.

The cyclists were cleaned up along a busy four-lane stretch of the highway.

There is a footpath on either side of the road and no bike lanes.

Melbourne cyclists targeted in attack

It is not the first time cyclists have been targeted by callous drivers on Melbourne roads.

A group of teenagers were arrested after two other cyclists were allegedly struck by a stolen car along Beach Rd last year.

Footage of that smash was later uploaded to social media.

Glen Gibson suffered several serious injuries after he and his mate were allegedly mown down by the crew of teenagers whose car windscreen was totally smashed.

He fractured three discs in his back and wore a brace for weeks.

The teenagers, one as young as 13, were later charged over the Beach Rd hit-run.
