A young truck driver charged over a double-fatal road tragedy at Murtoa in the state’s west has fronted court for the first time.

Jack Andrew, 24, is facing two counts of dangerous driving causing death over a collision between a truck and a car on the Wimmera Highway, about 300 kilometres northwest of Melbourne, on February 28.

Two people in the car, a 76-year-old man and his 71-year-old female passenger, both from South Australia, died at the scene.

Mr Andrew, from the Bendigo suburb of Eaglehawk, appeared via video link from his lawyer’s office in Horsham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

No details about the fatal crash were aired during the brief administrative hearing.

The prosecution was granted 12 weeks to prepare the hand up brief – six weeks more than the usual allocation – to allow time for vehicle reports to be completed.

Mr Andrew, who is on bail, will return to Horsham Magistrates’ Court on August 16.
