Victoria’s top road cop has been left “mortified” after he was caught speeding while on his way to a meeting.

A mobile camera picked up Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir driving 58km/h in a 50km/h zone in Parkville on February 29.

He was driving an unmarked police car when he was caught speeding on Manningham St at 10.55am.

Mr Weir believed he was driving in a 60km/h zone at the time but received a fine on Friday.

His good driving record meant he was eligible for a warning, but he has been fined $337 and lost one demerit point.

Mr Weir said he took full responsibility for the offence and maintained no one should ever speed.

“I take full responsibility for this error and am mortified it has occurred,” he said.

“I’ve spent my entire career advocating for road safety and this incident proves nobody is immune from making a mistake on the road.

“No matter how far over the limit, all speeding is unacceptable.

“For someone in my position this is especially true.

“I am truly sorry.”
