Homicide squad detectives have charged a young man after another man was allegedly stabbed to death while walking home from a night out with his wife for her birthday in Sale.
Clint Allen, 38, was alongside his wife Bek and three others when they allegedly ran into trouble outside The Criterion Hotel, in the Gippsland region, sometime after midnight.
Mr Allen’s stepdaughter, who was not present at the time of the stabbing, believes Mr Allen was then attacked by an unknown person.
The group sounded the alarm and called police, who arrived at the York-MacAlister street intersection to find Mr Allen wounded about 1am.
Officers applied first aid while awaiting paramedics, but he tragically died at the scene.
Late on Sunday evening Victoria Police charged a 20-year-old Sale man with murder in relation to the incident.
He has been remanded and will appear in Sale Magistrate’s Court on May 8.
It remained unclear why Mr Allen was allegedly stabbed but his family say he was simply walking home from the night out, where they were celebrating Ms Allen’s 37th birthday.
Ms Allen did not wish to speak publicly while the police investigation continued.
Mr Allen is survived by stepdaughter Makala Lister, who is about to have a daughter of her own.
She expects to give birth in about six weeks, a milestone Mr Allen narrowly missed out on.
“Clint was an amazing husband, father and grandfather to his unborn granddaughter,” Ms Lister said.
“He was loved by everyone who met him and was always up for a chat no matter what topic.
“He was a BMX champion, outdoor enthusiast who loved camping, dirt bikes and 4WD.
“He will be forever missed and loved from everyone he came in contact with.”
Speaking in the wake of the stabbing, one resident said Sale’s main strip was “not safe at night anymore” and that he was recently threatened by knife-wielding “crazies”.
“I worked home from work the other night at 11pm and there was crazies swearing and waving knives at me in Raymond St near the banks,” Tez Leeson said on social media.
