Police have charged a man after he allegedly mowed down and killed a woman in his car in the state’s north last month after she stepped in to try to break-up an altercation between him and another person.
A 26-year-old Tatura man was charged on Friday with dangerous driving causing the death of Kylie Sanders in Hargrave Court, Yarrawonga on Friday, April 25.
Bystanders rushed to Ms Sander’s side immediately after she was struck and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but she could not be saved.
Police will allege the man was in the altercation and hit Ms Sanders after he got into a car to leave the scene of the fight.
“The car collided with the woman who had attempted to intervene as it left the scene,” a police statement said.
Last month, the Tatura man was charged with making threats to kill and breach of a court order when he was located in Shepparton in the early hours following the incident.
Ms Sanders, originally from the small town of Rutherglen, had moved to Yarrawonga and was working in the border town of Corowa.
A Rutherglen resident said “the town was reeling” after the news of Ms Sanders’ death.
The man has been bailed to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on June 5.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam or CCTV footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
