Shots fired at man in Melbourne’s north in ‘targeted’ attack

A Coolaroo resident has described the “scary” moment they heard four gunshots ring out as police search for a gunman who they believe carried out a targeted attack.

Four gunshots can be heard in audio from a CCTV camera attached to a home at the centre of the shooting.

Three shots ring out in quick succession before a fourth is heard moments later.

Mona Atwa, whose house sits just meters from where the shots were fired, said she heard the shots from inside her home.

“I heard three or four shots continuously… yes it was scary,” she said.

Her husband, Mohamed Hamza, also said extra police should patrol the streets.

When asked if it would make him and his three children feel safe, Mr Hamza said:

“To be honest, especially at night, yes, they should be out here patrolling,” he said.

“For my family, for me, for everyone.

“I tell my son not to be out at night, I’m always telling him not to walk outside late at night.”

Police are investigating a wild shooting outside several residential homes in Melbourne’s north on Tuesday night.

Detectives understand a number of shots were fired at a man at the intersection of Longford and Norval crescents in Coolaroo about 10.30pm.

“An altercation occurred between two men at the intersection of Longford and Norval crescents about 10.30pm,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

“One of the men has fired numerous shots at the 31-year-old victim, who managed to escape without injury and report the matter to police.”

Police believe the incident was a targeted attack.

The shooting comes as tensions between Middle Eastern organised crime groups continue to simmer across Melbourne’s north.

In February this year, links between MEOC and a shooting in Thomastown were being investigated after a 20-year-old was shot at the Whittlesea Public Gardens.

Another man, a 19-year-old from Thomastown, was also viciously bashed in the same gardens in what was a linked and targeted attack.

It is unclear whether Tuesday’s shooting is linked to any ongoing tensions in the MEOC sphere.

A number of detectives scoured properties along Longford Cres, likely in search of the bullets the victim managed to avoid.

Local residents claim to have heard up to five gunshots as the late night drama unfolded.

One Norval Cres resident, who wished not to be named, told the Herald Sun her 13-year-old daughter first raised the alarm.

“My daughter ran up to me and said ‘mum, mum, mum, did you hear those gunshots?’,” she said.

“Her face went all pale... It is scary because I’ve got a family here.”

The Coolaroo local, who says she hears the sound of gunshots “regularly”, called on Victoria Police to step up patrols on local streets in the area.

“We just want to be protected, that’s all,” she added.

“We want more protection, we want cops to come here every now and then to patrol around the streets.

“We want to be protected by the police because we don’t know what’s happening, we don’t know what’s going to happen 15 minutes later.

“We know we’re safe with them.

“There’s idiots around who think they’re top s**t, why are they like this?”

The gunman remains on the run.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
