Thomastown shooting linked to Middle Eastern organised crime

Detectives are investigating after a 20-year-old man was shot in broad daylight in a public park in what’s been described as a targeted attack.

Middle Eastern organised crime links are being investigated in the shooting of a man and the bashing of another at Thomastown.

The victim, a 20-year-old man from Thomastown, suffered a gunshot wound in a confrontation at the Whittlesea Public Gardens on Saturday.

The victim took himself to hospital after the incident, which happened at 5pm off Barry Rd.

His injuries were not life-threatening.

Another man, 19 from Thomastown, was assaulted at the gardens in what was a linked attack.

Detectives from the armed crime squad are investigating the violence.

“The incident is believed to be a targeted attack and no arrests have been made at this stage,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

It is unclear whether the incident is linked to any ongoing tensions in the MEOC sphere in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.
