Series of videos capturing dangerous dirt bike hoon activity racks up over a million views

A series of videos showing Melbourne hoons performing “reckless” stunts on our roads have been watched more than a million times on social media.

Melbourne's electric dirt bike scourge

A series of alarming videos showing young teens driving erratically and dangerously on electric dirt bikes through busy Melbourne roads have racked up more than a million views on social media.

Almost 50 videos posted within the past eight weeks show young suburban teens standing on the seats of their bikes and performing “reckless” stunts as oncoming traffic continues by.

In one clip, two of the electric bike enthusiasts stand on their seats for hundreds of metres along Millers Rd in Altona North, continuing through the Blackshaws Rd intersection.

That video was viewed almost half a million times on Instagram alone.

The two bikes in that viral video were later impounded by police, while a further six were taken away from an organised street meeting in Altona in September.

More than a dozen young hoons were also issued with infringement notices for riding unlicensed or unregistered bikes at that meeting.

Victoria Police said with the state’s road toll at a 15-year high, they would not tolerate the blatant disregard for road safety in the lead up to Christmas.

“General duties police and Highway Patrol units will continue to have a highly visible presence to deter dangerous riding on the roads and in parks,” a spokesperson said.

“Reckless behaviour that puts other road users at risk will not be tolerated, and anyone engaging in this behaviour can expect a swift response from police.

“Even if we don’t catch you in the act, remember it won’t be long until we’re knocking on your door.”

One of the 45 videos shows a group of young electric cyclists performing wheelies inside Chadstone Shopping Centre, before completing a less-than-impressive burnout outside the Target store.

Many of the bikes, which are understood to be made by Melbourne company Stealth Electric Bikes for off-road use, are capable of reaching 80km/h and are sold for upwards of $12,000.

On Monday, a 31-year-old rider was killed after he came off an e-scooter on Forster St in Norlane, becoming the 279th road fatality this year.

Last month, a speeding motorcyclist was killed in Frankston after the rider smashed into a Ford station wagon after travelling at more than 220km/h.

At the same time last year, 232 people had lost their lives, making the 2023 road toll the highest since 2008.

Victoria Police will on Friday kick off Operation Roadwise, targeting speeding, drug and alcohol affected drivers during the high-risk holiday period for 18 days.
