Senior Hells Angels bikie Luke Moloney quits club, court told

He was considered one of the most senior bikies in the Hells Angels and ran Melbourne’s city chapter, but he has now renounced his membership, a court has heard.

Hells Angels bikie arrested over bashing

Hells Angels bikie boss Luke Moloney has quit the club, a court has heard.

Moloney, who had been president of the outlaw motorcycle gang’s Angel City chapter, was now out of the club, Judge Richard Maidment told the County Court last month.

Judge Maidment was sentencing Moloney over the bashing of a former member in 2022, carried out with Hells Angels Darkside chapter president Kane Montebello and another man, a sergeant-at-arms.

The victim, a Hells Angels supporter, had been summoned to Moloney’s Reservoir home to hand over his club gear and be booted out for fraternising with a member of the rival Mongols outfit.

Twenty minutes after arriving, mixed martial arts fighter Montebello turned up and picked up a wooden bat and pointed it at the victim.

“You asked him whether there was a reason why you shouldn’t wrap the bat around his face,” Judge Maidment said.

“At that point, you, Moloney, shut the garage door and stood in front of the garage.”

The sergeant-at-arms blocked another exit before Montebello slapped him in the face and grabbed his nose ring.

The victim then pushed Montebello away, stood up and headed towards the back fence where the third man grabbed his right leg.

Montebello then hit him to the elbow with the bat but he was able to kick out and free himself, before falling from the fence and bolting away.

The court found Moloney did not strike any blows during the incident but brandished a knife as the violence unfolded.

Judge Maidment said he had acted jointly with Montebello and the sergeant-at-arms in an onslaught which left the victim in the Royal Melbourne Hospital with arm injuries.

“The punishment occurred with your sanction, Mr Moloney,” he said.

“It was ... an ugly incident which was morally and legally unjustified. Your victim was outnumbered and at a considerable disadvantage at the time.”

Moloney, 42, and Montebello, 33, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury.

Moloney also admitted to handling stolen goods and possessing a schedule 4 poison after a book of prescription forms and a box of medication were found at his home.

“You have since renounced your club membership and you have disassociated yourself from members and supporters of that club,” Judge Maidment said of Moloney.

Moloney was convicted, placed on an 12-month good behaviour bond and fined $1500.

Judge Maidment said the sentence appeared “lenient” but told the court he had to factor in the 379 days Moloney had spent in custody after he was arrested.

He also took into consideration Moloney’s work ethic and “stable relationship” with his partner and 10-year-old son.

Montebello was convicted, placed on an 18-month good behaviour bond and fined $12,000.

Moloney will return to court on February 20 for a contest mention where he plans to fight a drug possession charge.
