Crimes are going unsolved across Victoria, with crooks targeting Melbourne’s well-heeled suburbs seemingly getting away with the most. Check your area here.

Almost two in three crimes remain unsolved in some of Victoria’s richest suburbs.

A Herald Sun analysis of crimes reported in every council area shows 65 per cent of reported offences in Boroondara are unsolved – the highest percentage of unsolved crimes in Victoria.

Charges have not been laid in 60 per cent of crimes in suburbs across Maribyrnong, Port Phillip, Yarra and Merri-Bek (formerly Moreland).

The figures from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal thieves were most often targeting residents’ cars, with stealing from a motor vehicle the most common crime reported in those areas, which include suburbs such as Kew, Balwyn, Balaclava and Kooyong.

It comes as police have been tasked with hunting down thieves in luxury stolen cars from the affluent region amid a spate of recent incidents.

Ferraris, Porches, Maseratis and Audis have all been on the menu for joy ride-hungry robbers, forcing Air Wing and high-speed chases through the southeast suburbs.

A group of people in mid-February were accused of stealing three prestige cars from Malvern before Stonnington Police located one of them – a 2016 Ferrari California – dumped in Dandenong the following day.

In November, police deployed the dog squad to hunt down a group of alleged teenage car thieves in Glen Iris, three months after a Toorak resident was left reeling when their allegedly stolen Audi was seen clocking speeds up to 200km/h on the Monash Freeway.

While offenders remained at large for most crimes across Melbourne’s leafy inner suburbs, the largest spikes in crime between 2021 and 2022 were in Victoria’s regions.

Overall crime rates in recent years have plateaued, or even dropped in several areas.

But offences in Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff and Swan Bay skyrocketed by 45 per cent in that time, while crime in the Mildura area jumped by about 28 per cent.

The most common crime across many regional areas was a reported breach of a family violence order.

A Boroondara spokeswoman suggested the high number of unsolved crimes in the LGA was balanced by relatively low rates of more serious indiscretions.

“Council is confident Victoria Police is doing everything they can to manage crime in our City, which we understand has one of the lowest amounts of serious crimes in the state,” the spokeswoman said.

“Council works closely in partnership with local police to reduce crime and improve community safety. While Council understands apprehending criminals is a matter for police, it works with police to assist when required.”

A Victoria Police spokesperson said while crime had overall dropped in suburbs across Boroondara, Monash, Moreland, Port Phillip, Whitehorse and Yarra in recent years, early reporting helped police track down offenders.

“Boroondara has its lowest crime rate since 2018, while other local government areas such as Moreland are experiencing decade low crime rates,” the spokesperson said.

“An integral component of solving crime and holding offenders accountable is the evidence gathering process, which is always aided by early reporting.”
