Shocking footage has emerged of hoons doing burnouts and tearing up streets in Melbourne’s outer suburbs, amid fears their antics will end in tragedy.

An alleged hoon involved in five illegal gatherings has been charged with 52 offences following an eight-month police investigation.

Police arrested the man after intercepting a white 2000 Mazda van travelling on Burbank Drive in Reservoir on March 24.

Officers then seized a set of cancelled number plates, a small amount of methamphetamine and heroin, knuckle dusters, and laser pointers during a raid at a residential address in Beveridge the following day.

It’s alleged the man performed burnouts and drove at dangerous speeds in front of 100 spectators during an illegal hoon gathering in Melbourne’s southeast in July last year.

The vehicle has also been linked to four other hoon gatherings in Keysborough, Truganina and Thomastown over the past eight months..

“Across the state we have seen a significant reduction in hoon activity however this does not mean police sit idly by and wait for hoon gatherings to occur,” Victoria Police Inspector Dean Grande said.

“We will continue to apply pressure to those who escape detection on the night of an event, and we will not rest until we have offenders in custody with some facing upward of six years jail time for their behaviour.”

The 24-year old Beveridge man was charged with dozens of offences including reckless conduct endangering life and injury, driving in a dangerous manner and use of an unsafe vehicle.

He was released on bail and will appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court at a later date.

Victoria Police have charged more than 200 of Melbourne’s worst hoon drivers and impounded over 140 vehicles as part of Operation Achilles over the past 9 months.

It comes as frustrated residents in a suburban Cranbourne street say they are fed up with hoons performing illegal burnouts, saying the dangerous drivers are “dicing with death”.

Neighbours living within the Quarters estate in Cranbourne West, which is near an industrial area, say there are witnessing cars performing burnouts – metres from a playground – and drivers excessively speeding through their streets every week.

But Victoria Police say they have charged more than 200 of Melbourne’s worst hoon drivers and impounded over 140 hoon vehicles during the past nine months as a result of Operation Achilles.

Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said: “As a result of our intensive focus on hoon drivers, we have dismantled and disrupted those responsible for organising and participating in significant illegal driving meets”.

“This has led to a significant reduction in large-scale, organised hoon activity across the state, however despite this drop off, we will continue to make it as difficult as possible for those who want to drive recklessly on our roads,” he said.

Footage uncovered by the Saturday Herald Sun shows hoons brazenly ripping up streets and industrial areas across Melbourne.

In one video uploaded to TikTok last month, a hoon is seen doing a burnout in a suburban St Albans street, with smoke seen billowing from the car.

Other footage shows a large Altona car meet in January, where spectators dangerously ran in the middle of the road to surround a motorcyclist performing a burnout.

Ali, who has lived in the Cranbourne West estate for almost two years, said hoon activity was “out of control”.

“They performed a burnout metres from my daughter’s bedroom, it’s concerning that they’re doing burnouts right near a park where families always go,” he said.

“I recently also saw a Porsche flying through the roundabout, it’s just so dangerous.”

Nearby neighbour Andrew said hoons were rife in and close to the housing estate.

“I captured footage of the hoons performing a huge burnout on the intersection of Evans Rd and Duff St. There was smoke everywhere,” he said.

“They mostly go to the industrial area and there are heaps of skid marks there, it’s so noisy and it needs to stop.”

Another resident, 30, who has lived with his partner in the estate for the past year, said he regularly saw hoons doing burnouts nearby Fergus Lane, which is close to the industrial estate.

“These hoons are dicing with death. This is a tragedy waiting to happen. This whole area has a lot of young families and the excessive speeding is a real concern for us all,” he said.

Commercial builder David also said some hoons were even trespassing onto private property to perform burnouts.

He arrived at a warehouse he was building in Cranbourne West after the Labour Day long weekend to discover the fresh floor covered in skid marks.

“They’re getting into brand new warehouses and they’re just doing burnouts with cars inside and then … they’re just going up and down the street,” he said.

“It’s getting pretty full-on.”

The commercial builder said young people were watching hooning videos on social media platforms like TikTok and were being enticed to do the same.

“The problem is they see so much stuff on social media of what everyone is doing, so they want to try and do it themselves,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Barrett said there were no verified reports that had been made to police by residents in Cranbourne West.

“We are also unable to confirm the specifics of the social media videos, such as where and when they occurred, and if police responded, based solely off the upload date of a social media video,” he said.
