A never-before-seen video of a Richard Pusey police interview shows him pointing the blame at the officers who stopped him on the Eastern Freeway for their deaths.
“You are blaming me for four people who weren’t looking on a freeway,” Pusey told detectives in the recorded interview in February.
“I was the only one watching. As soon as I leave, everyone gets thrown in the air.”
The video was played on Wednesday in Sunshine Magistrates’ Court where Pusey is fighting allegations he caused offence by sharing images of the April 2020 crash that killed officers, Lynette Taylor, Kevin King, Glen Humphris and Josh Prestney.
Pusey, 44, had been stopped on the freeway for speeding in his Porsche when Mohinder Singh’s truck veered into the emergency lane, striking the officers.
The former mortgage broker miraculously survived after he had walked away to the side of the road to urinate moments earlier.
In the record of interview, he also claimed he did investigators a favour by filming the aftermath of the scene so it could be used as evidence.
“I don’t share it over Snapchat or anything like that (like others did),” he said.
“They don’t get charged. I get charged because I am f---ing special.”
Asked by police why he thought he was special, Pusey said: “Because you f---ing harass me all the time.”
Pusey was not being interviewed on February 8 over the crash, but continued to speak about it and the impact it had on him when questioned about new allegations he had attached graphic collision images to a complaint about his insurance company, lodged with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority in November last year.
He was arrested after he was also accused of using an image of a dead police officer from the crash site as his profile picture when posting a Google review about Porsche Centre Melbourne on February 7.
“You’ve conjured up the allegations again to keep me in prison,” Pusey told interviewing officers, later adding that they were “playing games” with him.
The court heard Pusey is suspected of also being responsible for an Instagram account titled “The Richard Pusey Show”, where he also shared images of the crash and complained about his insurance claim being rejected.
In one post, a photo of his damaged Porsche was posted with the words: “You don’t need one of these to bend a cop.”
It is the prosecution case that Pusey only used the images as part of his complaint and the review “for no reason but to seek attention and cause distress”.
Representing himself in court, Pusey has pleaded not guilty to two counts each of using a carriage service to cause offence and committing an indictable offence on bail.
The case was adjourned to September 28 for further submissions.
