Investigators are hunting down a mystery man they believe may have crucial insight into the alleged murder of Heidelberg West man Ali Chaaban.
Homicide Squad detectives have issued a public appeal to find a man believed to be the last person to speak with Mr Chaaban before he died earlier this year.
The 49-year-old was found with life-threatening-injuries following reports of a fight outside his Heidelberg West home at about midday on June 15.
He was rushed to hospital but ultimately succumbed to his fatal wounds.
40-year-old Daniel Devlin, also from Heidelberg West, was arrested at the scene and later charged with Mr Chaaban’s murder.
The investigation remains ongoing and detectives are eager to speak with a man who was at Mr Chaaban’s home moments before his alleged murder.
Two months on and despite their best efforts, police have been unable to identify the mystery man or locate his whereabouts.
Investigators said he is being treated as a witness only and do not suspect he was involved in Mr Chaaban’s death.
Images of the man have been released to the public along with a plea from police urging anyone who recognises the man to come forward.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said: “Police are keen to speak to anyone who may recognise the man and has information about his identity, and are also asking the man himself to come forward.”
Mr Chaaban has been remembered as a “one of a kind” and “beautiful” friend in tributes from those close to him.
Mr Devlin is set to next appear in court on October 21.
