A man was allegedly murdered in the street in Heidelberg West.
Ali Chaaban, 49, was fatally wounded in a fight with another man on Alamein Rd just before midday on Saturday.
Mr Chaaban was remembered by friends as “one of a kind”.
“This should not have happened to you. RIP beautiful friend,” one friend wrote on social media.
“You were one of a kind and will be missed,” friend Kane Daniels wrote.
The Heidelberg West man was transported to hospital where he died of his injuries.
Daniel Devlin, also from Heidelberg West, was arrested at the scene.
The 40-year-old refused to front the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Sunday where he faced a charge of murder.
The court heard the Aboriginal man was withdrawing from heroin and has an acquired brain injury.
“He’s asked to see a nurse or doctor (in custody) as soon as possible,” his lawyer Nadia Giorgianni told the court.
The men were known to each other, police said.
Mr Devlin will reappear in court on October 21.
