Police search for answers on Fawkner ambush that injured Sam Abdulrahim

Police hope this video will help lead them to the people responsible for the attempted hit on former Mongols bikie Sam Abdulrahim.

Detectives investigating the attempted hit on Sam “The Punisher” Abdulrahim have released CCTV footage of a car they believe is linked to the ambush.

The black Ford Focus was seen driving on Barry Rd, Coolaroo, on June 25, just hours before gangland figure Abdulharim was shot at his cousin’s funeral at Fawkner Cemetery.

The Focus travelled east on Barry Rd, opposite Upfield railway station, at 9.49am.

It then turned around and headed back in the opposite direction at 9.55am.

Armed crime squad investigators believe that car is likely to be connected to men who two hours later opened fire on the Mercedes-Benz of Abdulrahim on Box Forest Rd in Fawkner.

Former Mongol bikie Abdulrahim had been leaving the funeral service when the balaclava-clad shooters pounced, wounding him eight times in an attack he was lucky to survive.

The panicked gunmen fled in a Mazda SUV which crashed into a fire hydrant and pole on Box Forest Rd, near Sydney Rd.

They ran, one hiding in a bin at the back of a fast-food restaurant before bolting less than a minute later.

The other carjacked a family’s Ford Territory and drove it to Brunswick Drive, Epping, where CCTV recorded him walking in the street soon after.

Abdulrahim was taken to a police station before being transported to hospital in a critical condition.

He made a speedy recovery and discharged himself weeks later.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Abdulrahim has for some years been a significant player in Middle-eastern organised crime in the northern suburbs and had been a Mongol until earlier this year when he was one of a wave of departures which included his mate Mark Balsillie and the high-profile Toby Mitchell.

It has previously been reported that Mongol leadership has spoken to him and denied having anything to do with the funeral incident.

Aftermath of Fawkner shooting captured on CCTV

Detective Inspector Mark Hatt from the armed crime squad said earlier this month that police were closing in on those responsible.

“We are committed to targeting those involved in this type of offending and holding them to account,” Insp Hatt said.

“We understand that incidents such as this one cause significant concern across the broader community.

“Rest assured, the indiscriminate use of illicit firearms remains a key focus for Victoria Police.”
