Police are probing a wild brawl that erupted at a barbecue in the car park of a Laverton warehouse on Saturday night.
Punches were thrown and baseball bats and planks of wood swung in a melee sparked by a rival group crashing the party.
The social gathering initially consisted of about to 20 to 30 men and was held outside Tiger Trailers on Little Boundary Rd.
But it spiralled out of control when another group turned up in similar numbers.
The fight spilled onto a neighbouring business precinct, where makeshift weapons and beer cans were left littered on Sunday.
But while the fight first flared at the barbecue within the Tiger Trailers car park, police believe none of the warehouse workers were involved.
Instead, it is understood warehouse boss Li Meiling told police he allowed a customer to host the barbecue there in act of kindness and had no idea who would be invited.
Mr Li declined to speak publicly on Sunday but has maintained his innocence.
It is unclear why the two groups came to blows.
Three men — a 36-year-old Williams Landing man, as well as a 28 and 35-year-old from Tarneit — suffered serious injuries in the fracas and remained hospitalised Sunday.
Others copped less severe injuries but several men presented themselves to various hospitals across the city’s west.
An empty cake box was left in the car park beside the barbecue, suggesting it may have been a birthday celebration before cracking into chaos.
Police were on Sunday puzzled as to what caused the fight.
“It just so happens that this is the business that was used to facilitate the barbecue last night,” Detective Senior Constable Erin Hardie said.
“There was an agreement that was made for the barbecue to take place, and obviously, things have gone south.”
Who crashed the gathering and what the “beef” between the groups was continued to be mystifying late on Sunday afternoon.
“We’re hoping that with anyone that might have information, we can try to piece together why these two parties have come together and what the beef is between them,” Sen Con Hardie said.
“We’re still trying to work out who those people are.”
No arrests were made on Sunday.
