A police officer is recovering in hospital after a callous hit and run collision in Melbourne’s west on Saturday.

Detectives say a vehicle struck the officer, who was on duty, on Sneydes Rd in Point Cook about 1pm.

Witnesses reportedly said two officers were attempting to detain a man from an SUV before it reversed, dragging one of the officers along the road.

“The driver fled in the vehicle and the passenger fled the scene on foot,” police said in a statement.

A crime scene was established outside the Featherbrook Shopping Centre where investigators dusted a pair of sunglasses left on the road and seized a white Asics shoe as evidence.

The male officer, aged in his 30s, was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his lower body.

Police were on Saturday evening investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the collision.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
