Two men have been arrested following a high speed chase throughout Melbourne’s southeast on Monday afternoon.

Police first spotted a Toyota Kluger with suspected stolen plates travelling on Blackburn Rd, Blackburn just before 2pm.

Officers initially tried to stop the car but it sped off.

When the driver refused to pull over, police then chased the car down William St, Armadale and the driver of the stolen vehicle tried to escape down Baldwin St but it was a dead-end street and stop sticks were installed.

Local residents said they heard a massive bang and feared the worst.

Freya Plapp, 20, said she heard a “massive bang.”

“It sounded like a gunshot at first,” Ms Plapp said.

“They must have thought it was a street but when they realised it was a no through road, they spun, made a quick turn and smashed into the police car and the pole,” she said.

She said the men tried to make a quick dash to getaway but didn’t get far.

“He tried to run off but they got him pretty quick.”

Another resident said she was at work at the time but came home to find the street full of police cars.

The driver of the Kluger, a 20-year-old together with his 41-year-old passenger were arrested.
