A manhunt is under way to find those behind a series of terrifying knife attacks that left two teenagers dead and an Uber driver recovering with stab wounds to his back.
Ride-sharing driver Hassan Ahmad remains in hospital after two passengers attacked him and stole his car on Johnston St, Fitzroy, in the early hours on Saturday.
His assault was one of six attacks – all but one involving the use of knives – police are investigating in a horror weekend across Melbourne.
Detectives have called for anyone with information on the attacks to come forward.
Acting Superintendent Troy Papworth said the incidents were “really concerning” and investigators were “actively” seeking witnesses.
“It is really concerning,’’ Superintendent Papworth said.
“We’ve had two young men lose their lives.’’
The nightmarish weekend began at Federation Square on Friday night when a teenager was rushed to hospital after being stabbed.
The next day at 3.40am, Mr Ahmad was set upon by his passengers in the carjacking before staggering into a Johnson St service station seeking help.
His grey Mazda 3 was later abandoned nearby.
Police resources were stretched again on Sunday morning after violence erupted at Flinders Street Station, Docklands, Coburg North and Richmond.
The first unfolded outside Flinders Street Station about 1.10am with a 15-year-old boy taken to hospital in a critical condition after a brutal assault.
Three teens, aged 14, 18 and 19, were charged over the assault, which did not involve weapons.
But a little over an hour later, about 2.30am in Elizabeth St, Coburg North, a teenager was killed in an assault with an “edged weapon”.
A big knife was found a block down the street, but it is unknown if it was used in the stabbing.
Several neighbours reported hearing a group of boys in Elizabeth St late on Saturday night.
“They were just talking really loudly at one another, I don’t know what they were saying, you could definitely hear their voices, they were male,” one resident said.
“There may have been four or five of them.”
Then, about 3.20am, emergency services were called to Bourke St, near the Harbour Esplanade, following reports of a brawl between a group of men.
Arriving officers found two men with stab wounds.
Both were rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where one died.
The second man remains in a critical condition.
Police are yet to make any arrests over the murder.
About 8.30am, a man in his 20s was also found stabbed, at a property in Wiltshire St, Richmond.Police are urging anyone with information or CCTV or dashcam footage on any of the attacks to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
