Alleged child snatcher on bail at the time

The man accused of attempting to snatch a child from a Box Hill tram was on bail at the time and suffering from mental health issues, a court has heard.

The man accused of attempting to snatch a child from a busy Melbourne tram suffers from a range of mental health issues and was on bail at the time, a court has heard.

Joshua Robinson, 39, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link shortly before 1pm on Thursday, charged over the attempted kidnapping.

No details of the alleged offending were aired in court other than to confirm the incident involved a young child and there was no CCTV footage on the tram at the time of the alleged incident.

The court heard Mr Robinson was currently on medication for depression, borderline personality disorder and diabetes.

The Camberwell man, who appeared with a shaved head and bright red fringe, clasped his hands in his lap and jiggeld throughout the brief administrative hearing.

Defence lawyer, Joshua Bruzzichessi, said his client was also withdrawing from cannabis.

The court heard there was an application to revoke Mr Robinson’s current bail, however this was adjourned until his next court appearance in November.

It is not known what Mr Robinson’s prior bail related to.

Mr Robinson was remanded behind bars to next face a committal mention on November 9.

It is allegedly attempted to snatch a child in a frightening incident which unfolded on a 109 tram travelling east of Elgar Road in Box Hill about 3.45pm on Monday.

A 39-year-old Camberwell man allegedly grabbed the young boy and attempted to drag him off the tram.

A female passenger intervened and pulled the child back on to the tram before the man fled on foot.

The boy was not physically injured during the incident.
