The eldest son of renowned rocker Nick Cave has been freed from prison on strict conditions following a violent assault on his mother.

Jethro Lazenby was jailed after an attack on his mum, Beau Lazenby, left her bloodied and bruised in her Collingwood home in March.

The 30-year-old was released on bail from Melbourne Remand Centre on Thursday after a magistrate ordered he undergo substance abuse treatment and avoid contact with his mum for two years.

Appearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from custody, the former model, who has dyed red hair and distinctive face tattoos including a rose on his cheek, remained motionless as the orders were read to him.

“I do say to you that it’s entirely in your best interests to participate with all support services that I’ve set-up for you,” Magistrate Donna Bakos said.

“It’s very very important that your path to rehabilitation will be a much more positive one and therefore you will be less of a risk to the community at large and in particular to your mother.”

In an earlier hearing, the court heard Lazenby was on bail when his mum found him on her front porch just after midnight on March 7.

Ms Lazenby made up a bed for her son after he convinced her to let him stay the night, before she retreated to her own room and locked the door.

The following day, the pair got in an argument after Lazenby demanded his mother go and buy him cigarettes.

Lazenby will return to court on June 29 to face further charges.

“While standing in front of the victim, the accused has then reached forward and grabbed both the victim’s shoulders with his hands,” a police prosecutor told the court.

“He lunged forward and kneed the victim to the face and nose, causing bleeding and bruising.”

After Lazenby left to buy cigarettes, his injured mum ran to a nearby pub and called police.

Lazenby was arrested a short time later and has remained in custody since.

He pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful assault and breaching court orders after other charges were struck out following a deal with prosecutors.

He was born in 1991 to Ms Lazenby, then a Melbourne model who was in a relationship with Nick Cave.

Lazenby previously said he didn’t meet his father until the age of seven, but adopted his surname to boost his modelling career and continues to use it on social media profiles.

“Tbh [to be honest] it’s not as profitable as one would think,” he said about his surname on Instagram.

Lazenby will return to court on June 29 to face further charges including stealing from a 7/11 and to be sentenced for the assault.
