The eldest son of rock star Nick Cave is behind bars for violently assaulting his mother.

Jethro Lazenby, 30, has admitted attacking his mum, Beau Lazenby, in her Collingwood home last month during which he lunged at her and kneed her in the face, leaving her bruised and bloodied.

The former model appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from custody on Friday and was seen pacing the room and tugging at his bright red hair.

The court heard Lazenby, who used his famous dad’s surname during a global modelling career when he was a teenager, was on bail when his mother found him on her front porch shortly after midnight on March 7 and convinced her to let him stay the night.

She made up a bed for her son before retreating to her own room and locking the door.

The following day, the pair got in an argument after Lazenby confronted her and demanded she go buy him cigarettes.

“While standing in front of the victim the accused has then reached forward and grabbed both the victim’s shoulders with his hands,” the police prosecutor told the court.

“He lunged forward and kneed the victim to the face and nose, causing bleeding and bruising.”

The court heard after Lazenby left to go buy cigarettes, the injured woman ran to a nearby pub and called police.

Lazenby was arrested a short time later and has remained in custody since.

In a deal with prosecutors, Lazenby pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful assault and breaching court orders.

The remaining charges, including intentionally causing injury, were struck out.

Sean Ghattas, for Lazenby, said his client had a longstanding diagnosis of schizophrenia and submitted his moral culpability was significantly reduced.

Mr Ghattas argued Lazenby should be sentenced to time served and released from prison.

Magistrate Donna Bakos, however, was not convinced.

“I’m not sure I agree with you,” Ms Bakos told Mr Ghattas.

“There is a considerable criminal history,” she said.

Lazenby was in 2018 jailed for unlawful assault over a series of violent attacks on his girlfriend.

A court heard Lazenby held the victim down, twisted her arm behind her back and screamed, “I’m going to murder you”, three times during the assault.

Ms Bakos said she would need time to consider the court material, including Lazenby’s criminal history, medical diagnosis and a victim impact statement, before handing down her sentence.

“I expect you to present to me some exit plan,” she told Mr Ghattas.

“I need to also know what is out there in the community and what’s proposed when he does eventually get released and I don’t know when that will be,” Ms Bakos said.

Lazenby will return to court in May for sentence.

Lazenby was born in 1991 to Ms Lazenby, then a Melbourne model who was in a relationship with Australian singer-songwriter Cave.

Ten days after Lazenby’s birth, Cave fathered another son, Luke, who was born in Brazil to Cave’s other girlfriend, stylist Viviane Carneiro.

Lazenby has previously revealed he did not meet his father until the age of seven, but adopted his surname on catwalks around the globe and continues to use it on several social media profiles.
