Multi-millionaire Adrian “Mr Lambo” Portelli has denied taking a social media swipe at Victoria’s legal system as he faced court on hoon charges.

The luxury car enthusiast posted a selfie to his 187,000 Instagram followers from inside Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on Monday with the caption: “Victoria – The place where you can get off lighter committing armed burglary than a driving offence”.

Taking photographs inside court buildings is banned in Victoria and offenders can be charged.

Wearing all black, the low-key dressed Mr Portelli, who is facing three driving charges, posed for a selfie with a fan before he entered the courtroom where his lawyers successfully asked for his case to be adjourned.

Speaking outside court after the brief hearing, Mr Portelli denied his social media post was mocking the court system.

“No, no definitely not, I’m all for it (the courts),” he said.

“We’ll sort this out and move on.”

He added he was keen to have his case resolved.

“It is what it is, it’s a driving matter and my legal team are taking care of it,” he said.

“I want to get it wrapped up and move on.”

Flanked by his lawyers as he left court, Mr Portelli was picked up by a waiting Maserati Quattroporte – valued at $219,000.

He is facing charges including careless driving, failing to have proper control of a vehicle on a road and driving in a manner causing one or more wheels of a motor vehicle to lose traction over alleged hooning on Licence Rd in Diggers Rest in December 2020.

It was not revealed in court what vehicle he was driving at the time of the alleged offending but his lawyer said there was a “minor matter” relating to distances involved.

The court heard lawyers for Mr Portelli, who is expected to contest the charges, were still attempting to obtain police material to help their case.

Originally from Melbourne’s western suburbs, Mr Portelli, 34, who is estimated to be worth more than $500m, made his fortune through his successful auto enthusiast club LMCT+ which has become one of Australia’s largest car communities.

The company makes money by offering subscribers discounts, offers and events from partners including UltraTune, Beaurepaires and Prestige Auto Works.

He made headlines earlier this year when he had a $3m McLaren sports car craned to his $39m penthouse on the 57th and 58th floors of the Sapphire by the Gardens building near Carlton Gardens.

A crowd gathered to watch as the McLaren was hoisted above the city streets to the apartment where it would be used as a living room decoration.

Mr Portelli was dubbed “Mr Lambo” after he appeared on reality TV show The Block last year where he placed a record-breaking bid on a home renovated by two contestants.

He is on bail and will return to Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on October 4.
