A Melbourne lawyer has fronted court for the first time after being charged over the death of a pedestrian who he allegedly struck while reversing on Flinders St.

Liam Murray, 33, represented himself in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday as he faced charges over the death of a 44-year-old Richmond woman who was struck while crossing Flinders St, near the intersection of Highlander Lane, on May 26.

Mr Murray, who is a senior associate at commercial firm KCL Law, was charged with dangerous driving causing death, careless driving and reversing when unsafe.

It’s alleged he was reversing in a dark-coloured Mazda CX-3 along the busy thoroughfare for about 25 to 30 metres when he struck the woman after she disembarked a tram.

The woman was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition but succumbed to her injuries on July 9.

Mr Murray, from Caulfield, was arrested at the scene but released pending further inquiries.

He was charged last Wednesday.

No details of the collision were aired during the brief administrative hearing.

Prosecutors said CCTV and body-worn footage would be served in a brief of evidence.

Mr Murray’s bail was extended and he will reappear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 14 for a committal mention.

According to KCL Law’s website, Mr Murray is a member of the firm’s construction and infrastructure team.
His practice focuses on contract management and disputes related to claims and responses in the construction industry.

Admitted to practice in October 2014, Mr Murray has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Deakin University.

KCL Law was contacted for comment.
