A man who fell five storeys to his death in front of horrified and distraught restaurant diners in Werribee has been identified as father-of-two Cain Cameron.
Cafe Baby J’s customers were shocked to see the 36-year-old man land in front of shopfront windows during dessert service about 10.30pm on Thursday.
It’s understood Mr Cameron fell from the fifth floor of the car park above.
Baby J’s owner Joey Spiteri said his staff and customers rushed outside and called emergency services immediately after seeing the victim hit the ground.
“He was in a really bad state, they just did the best they could and waited for emergency services to arrive,” he said.
“I don’t know what he was trying to do but he landed straightaway in front of my door.
“(It’s) very distressing, I just feel terrible for the family and everyone involved.”
Emergency crews desperately tried to revive Mr Cameron but he died at the scene.
Mr Cameron’s brother, Greg, said the pair had plans to meet later that evening.
Those plans were tragically cut short when he saw his brother lying on the Duncans Rd path.
“We’re pretty broken,” he said.
“(It’s) pretty hard to wrap your head around.”
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police believed Mr Cameron was the driver of a van they had been pursuing with the assistance of the Air Wing earlier on Thursday evening.
Police said the driver of a van failed to stop about 9.30pm after attempts were made to pull it over, hoping to question the driver in relation to an aggravated carjacking in Hoppers Crossing on October 22.
The van was then followed to Duncans Rd in Werribee and was seen entering the Holiday Inn car park, where it was believed Mr Cameron fell from the fifth floor about 10.30pm.
Family and friends gathered at the scene on Friday morning, laying floral tributes as they come to terms with the news of Mr Cameron’s death.
Mr Cameron’s friend Josh Cousins said it was sad to think about his two children growing up without a dad.
“He was a gentleman,” he said.
“You can’t say a bad word about him.
“It’s just horrible, no one deserves this.”
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident with assistance from Professional Standards Command.
