A Melbourne man faces up to 15 years’ jail after police allege he had child abuse material on his mobile phone.

The Manor Lakes man, 29, was due to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday following a seven-month investigation.

The AFP started its investigation in June last year when it received a report from the United States’ National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

“The report alleged the man was linked to eight files containing child abuse material uploaded on a social media account,” an AFP statement said.

Investigators executed a search warrant at the man’s home on December 6 last year.

“During the search, investigators located and removed several electronic devices suspected of containing child abuse material and later seized two devices on which child abuse material was identified,” the statement said.

The man was charged with possessing child abuse material accessed or obtained using a carriage service, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years’ jail.
