The man who left Andrew O’Keefe’s unit shortly before the TV star failed a drug test was allegedly carrying a cocktail of illicit drugs.
Mitchell Sturt, 51, was stopped by police on a Vaucluse street 10 days ago after police monitoring O’Keefe’s home as part of his bail conditions saw the mystery man leave.
Sturt, a cricket fanatic from Abbotsford in Sydney’s inner west, was allegedly carrying the drug ice, cocaine, LSD and GHB.
He was charged with five offences including drug possession, and will face court on January 11.
When contacted by The Daily Telegraph, Sturt declined to comment on the drug charges he is facing.
O’Keefe was back in court last week charged with breaching bail when a routine drug swab returned a positive reading to cocaine and methylamphetamine.
But his barrister Sebastian De Brennan successfully argued the test could have been contaminated and was not “foolproof”.
Mr De Brennan told Waverley Local Court the former Channel 7 star’s friend had been at the apartment, which could have caused the swab to be contaminated.
He denied O’Keefe had touched drugs since he was released from a lengthy stint in rehab three weeks earlier.
“A male is seen to be leaving the accused’s residence and was … found with an amount of prohibited drugs. Your honour might infer from that someone has gone into the house, had drugs on their person,” Mr De Brennan told the court.
Outside court, O’Keefe told the media the swab was contaminated and insisted he had not touched drugs.
“That’s what we discovered in court … There was a high probability of … contamination.”
Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge allowed O’Keefe’s bail to continue on conditions including that he be screened weekly for illicit drugs and continue attending Narcotics Anonymous.
“You just can’t afford another knock like this,” she said.
O’Keefe spent six months at a Port Stephens rehabilitation centre after pleading not guilty to a series of charges when police accused him of attacking a woman at his then city apartment on January 25.
Police allege O’Keefe grabbed a woman by the throat then pushed her to the ground and punched her.
He is then accused of punching and kicking the 38-year-old woman a second time before she left the unit.
Part of O’Keefe’s bail conditions for the alleged assault are that he submit to routine drug swabs to show he is clean.
He is due to face court again on December 14.
