Ilknur Caliskan charged with murdering her husband on Mount Disappointment camping trip

A woman accused of fatally stabbing her husband on a camping trip to Mount Disappointment has wept through her first court appearance.

A woman has sobbed in court while struggling to hear from malfunctioning hearing aids after she was charged with murdering her husband on a camping trip at Mount Disappointment.

Ilknur Caliskan, 46, sat in the dock at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Monday morning where she cried as her loved ones looked on from the front row, wiping away their own tears.

The court heard it was the Craigieburn woman’s first time in custody, where she faces a charge of murder over the stabbing death of her husband Serdar Caliskan, 50, on Saturday night.

Her lawyer, Gabrielle Yozefovich, asked the court if Mrs Caliskan could see a custody nurse to assist her with her hearing aids.

“I’m advised the battery had died and they’re no longer working,” Ms Yozefovich said, noting that her client didn’t need to see the nurse for anything else, and was not taking any medication.

She said Mrs Caliskan would be applying for bail at a later time, but made no application on Monday.

Magistrate Peter Mithen told Mrs Caliskan that he appreciated “you may not be able to hear me”, but remanded her in custody, with her next court appearance listed in December.

After she was removed from the dock, a number of loved ones walked from the court.

A young woman, wiping tears from her eyes, was led away with the assistance of two young men.

Emergency services were called to a vehicle in remote bush on Spur Rd near Clonbinane, north of Melbourne, at 11.30pm on Saturday.

There, they found Mr Caliskan suffering a stab wound.

He died at the scene.

Mrs Caliskan was arrested on scene and charged with murder on Sunday afternoon.

She will return to court for a committal mention on December 19.
