A Narre Warren man has fronted court after he allegedly stabbed a man to death and dumped his body outside a Melbourne hospital.

Jordan Riley, 40, appeared via video link from custody in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday after being charged with the murder of Daniel Cockerill.

Mr Cockerill was dropped off at Casey Hospital with a stab wound to his upper body on March 26.

Police believed a maroon Volvo sedan drove into the ambulance emergency bay about 7.30am.

The driver got out and called for help from nearby paramedics before allegedly pulling an unconscious Mr Cockerill from the car.

He was treated by hospital staff but died a short time later with the driver allegedly fleeing the scene.

Mr Riley, who sat slouched in a chair during the short hearing, appeared confused as the prosecution briefed the magistrate on the evidence expected to be brought before the court, which included CCTV.

He did not apply for bail.

Police said a 37-year-old man was interviewed on Thursday over the death but was released without charge.

Mr Riley was remanded to appear in court on September 8.

It comes as Mr Cockerill’s family and friends pleaded for answers over his mysterious death.

His friend, Kylie Coulstock, told the Herald Sun she was “absolutely relieved” about the charge.

“It’s about bloody time, it’s justice for Daniel,” she said.

Mr Cockerill’s cousin, Amanda McIver, said she wanted closure.

“We’re glad that someone has been charged,” she said.

“We’re hoping this closes everything for us, we hope we get some closure but there’s still a long way to go.”

Ms Coulstock said Mr Cockerill was a hard worker and a social butterfly.

“He was one of the most kind-hearted, caring, trusting people I knew,” she said.

“He was an absolutely amazing man.”
