A man has been charged over the harrowing Caulfield South crash that killed two people on May 15.
Police will allege the driver of a black BMW sedan was speeding and ran a red light before it collided with another vehicle, a silver Honda sedan, at about 10.30pm and caused it to roll.
The Honda was hit with such force that it rolled about 60m down North Rd toward the Nepean Hwy, leaving wreckage strewn across the road.
Both occupants of the sedan, a 22-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man both from Glen Huntly, tragically died at the scene.
The passenger of the BMW, a 24-year-old Glen Huntly man, remains in hospital in a stable condition.
The 24-year-old male driver of the BMW, from Ashwood, was released from hospital today and interviewed by police, charged with two counts of culpable driving.
He was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 25.
Witnesses reported hearing a car barrelling down the road before a loud bang that was compared to a “jet engine” by one resident and “thunder” by another.
The horror crash occurred outside the Caulfield South fire station and firefighters immediately rushed to the scene.
About “30-40 people” came out of their homes in a bid to help, but were quick to realise the pair from the silver sedan could not be saved.
