Charges have been laid over an “avoidable” Eastern Freeway crash that killed a loving Boronia father last year.
Traffic control worker Peter Dyck, 58, died after an out-of-control Toyota MR2 careered into him while working in Clifton Hill late at night on August 30.
The red coupe was travelling east along the entrance to the freeway before colliding with the centre concrete barrier and veering across all six lanes.
It then smashed into Mr Dyck, who was inspecting a light pole, and another parked traffic control vehicle.
My Dyck was rushed to hospital but later died.
Parts of the Eastern Freeway were shut for more than 12 hours after the crash.
The alleged Toyota driver, a 27-year-old North Melbourne man, was on Friday charged with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death, driving in a manner dangerous, careless driving and exceeding the speed limit.
Australian Workers’ Union spokeswoman Jade Campbell said Mr Dyck’s death “should not have happened”.
“It was so avoidable”, she said at the time.
The accused driver was bailed to appear before the Magistrates’ Court on June 3.
