A man has been charged with murder over the stabbing death of another man during an alleged botched robbery in Melbourne’s northeast earlier this year.

Homicide Squad detectives charged a 43-year-old Lalor man on Friday morning, nearly five months after a 36-year-old Doreen man was killed at a Victoria Drive home in Thomastown on July 11.

The fatal stabbing prompted a police manhunt for the alleged killer, who handed himself into police more than a week later.

He was initially charged with aggravated burglary, common law assault and theft and was remanded in custody.

His charges were upgraded to include murder after he fronted the Melbourne Magistrates court on Friday.

Paramedics tried to save the 36-year-old victim, but he died at the scene about 8.40pm.

Police also arrested a 45-year-old Glenroy man at the scene on the day of the murder.

He was charged with aggravated burglary with a person present, theft and common law assault.

Police allege the group all knew one another and that the robbery was a targeted attack.
