Jasper Milon made an illegal turn that resulted in the death of a grandma in a horror crash

A young man involved in a horror crash in Melbourne’s southeast made a major error that caused the death of a 75-year-old woman, a court has heard.

Jasper Milon was driving a Toyota HiLux when he collided with a Mazda sedan in Carrum in November 2020.

A young tradie took a “calculated risk” when he made an illegal turn that led to a horror crash which claimed the life of a grandmother.

Apprentice electrician Jasper Milon, 22, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death after he turned his Toyota HiLux from a keep clear zone and collided with a Mazda sedan in Carrum in November 2020.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 75-year-old Chelsea woman, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died two days later.

During a pre-sentence hearing at the County Court on Tuesday, prosecutor Vivienne Jones said the P-plater made a “calculated risk” when he turned into the path of the Mazda which was travelling at 55km/h.

Miss Jones also flagged his bullbar was a “direct factor” in the death of the woman but accepted he was not speeding or driving under the influence.

“ (Mr Milon was) clearly within the speed limit, wasn’t driving erratically or aggressively (and) wasn’t on drugs,” she said.

Mr Milon’s lawyer Hugo Moodie told the court his client thought he was able to make the turn at the intersection of Station Street and McLeod Road.

“He said to police that he looked up, saw the car, thought he had enough room to turn then looked in the direction he was turning,” he said.

Mr Moodie said the young driver, who was not injured and remained at the scene with his mate, had expressed “sadness, regret and distress” following the incident.

Judge Gabriele Cannon said the crash was a “tragic outcome” for everyone involved and she was unlikely to jail Mr Milon.

A few months prior to the accident, the intersection underwent roadworks to remove boomgates and combine the McLeod Rd and Nepean Hwy arterial roads.

Lanes were also introduced for traffic turning right into McLeod Road from Station Street, in hope of improving safety in the area in line with railway crossing removal works.

Mr Milon will return to the County Court for sentence on December 16.
