A cyber ransom attack on Victoria’s biggest jail is under police investigation.
Port Phillip Prison in Melbourne’s west has 1000 inmates within its walls but is now trying to stave off outlaws on the outside.
The Herald Sun understands those behind the attack have demanded a ransom to back off.
Management has taken steps to bolster security and the safety of staff and detainees.
Prisoner visits, both in person and via video, have been suspended in recent days.
The Herald Sun understands some phone access at the prison is also restricted but essential calls can be arranged.
Professional visits are also being made possible.
Victoria Police and the State Government’s Cyber Incident Response Team have been notified.
The jail, at Truganina, is not regarded as being in lockdown.
A spokesman for Port Phillip’s operator, G4S, confirmed there had been a cyber security incident.
“Corrections Victoria is currently working with G4S to ensure these issues are resolved as quickly as possible,” the spokeswoman said.
“There has been no impact on the safety and security of staff and prisoners.”
The Australian Cyber Security Centre says ransomware is a malicious software which deprives victims of their own computer systems.
Those behind the attacks, usually operating from overseas, then demand ransom payments.
