Homemade machinegun seized in Glen Waverley raid

Dramatic footage shows the moment detectives swooped on a Glen Waverley home, seizing a cache of weapons including a homemade machinegun.

A homemade machinegun has been seized in a raid at Glen Waverley.

Detectives from the Victoria Police illicit firearms squad and Australian Border Force officers have confiscated guns, ammunition and other weapons after moving on a property at Southdown Ave early this morning.

They said the investigation began after ABF this month detected a silencer in imported air cargo.

A search at Southdown Ave uncovered a submachine-gun and another firearm, ammunition, firearm parts and other weapons.

A Glen Waverley man, 53, was charged with weapons offences, including two counts of being a non-prohibited person possessing a firearm, manufacturing a handgun without a licence, possessing cartridge ammo without a licence, failing to secure a gun safely, possessing a silencer, possessing a traffickable quantity of weapons and possessing a banned weapon.

He will face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on March 31.

Detective Sen-Sgt Leigh Howse of the IFU said the result was significant.

““These firearms will now be forensically examined and we can begin building a picture about how these guns came to be in the community, what offending they may have been involved in and what can we learn from each of these weapons to further disrupt the trafficking and use of illicit firearms in Victoria,” he said.

Supt Uriah Turner of the ABF said: “This is a fantastic outcome and I congratulate all officers involved. The ABF will continue to work with the Illicit Firearms Squad and Victoria Police, to investigate and prosecute those who choose to engage in this type of criminal activity.”
