A heroic bus driver has used a fire extinguisher to fight off two men attacking a teenager with a knife at a bus stop in Melbourne.

The 19-year-old was sitting at a bus stop on Stud Rd in Rowville, in Melbourne’s southeast, when he was approached by the pair about 9.30pm on Thursday night.

The bus driver came to the victim’s rescue holding a fire extinguisher towards the duo, leading them to flee the scene in a silver BMW.

The victim, who was not cooperative with police, has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It comes after laws to raise the age of criminal responsibility from 10 to 12 in Victoria passed the parliament’s upper house after a marathon sitting of parliament overnight.

The government’s 942-page Youth Justice Bill passed with an absolute majority shortly after 1.30am, after hundreds of amendments were considered and voted on.

The bill is now expected to sail through the lower house when parliament returns later this month.

Knox Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
