A bottle shop worker has suffered “life changing” injuries after he defended his store against hammer wielding thieves in a terrifying attempted robbery.
Police are on the hunt for two offenders who attacked a Glen Waverley bottle shop owner as he was closing for the night about 9pm on Sunday.
The store is located near the Blackburn Rd and High Street Rd intersection.
It’s believed the worker, a 48 year old Mount Waverley man, behind the counter refused to hand over cash to the thieves, who were armed with a hammer and tyre iron, before they assaulted him and fled the shop empty-handed.
Monash Crime Investigative unit detective senior constable Leah Gladstone said the worker’s severe facial injuries from the attack will “stay with him for the rest of his life”.
“There’s not only the physical injuries but the emotional trauma this has caused is going to be something that’s with him for a very long time,” she said.
“He’s just going to work to support his young family and is confronted by these two offenders … it’s appalling and is something that will be with him for the rest of his life mentally and physically.
“He’s extremely traumatised by the matter.”
Detective senior constable Gladstone said the offenders were “caught off guard” by the victim who fought back.
It’s believed the offenders fled on foot towards Blackburn Rd before speeding off in a car.
Police are treating the incident as a “stand alone” attack.
The staff member remains in hospital with serious head injuries
Police have also released images and CCTV which shows the two hooded offenders approach the worker and point their weapons at him.
