A former primary school teacher sent pictures of his penis to ex-students and requested nude images in return, a court has heard.

Former Beaconsfield Primary School teacher Nicholas O’Shea, 30, pleaded guilty in the County Court on Monday to a series of charges related to sexual offending against children.

The court previously heard O’Shea met his male victims while they were students at the primary school, where he was a longstanding year 6 teacher.

He then targeted them on social media after they left for high school and were aged in their teens.

One boy was sent over 400 intimate images by O’Shea over a three-year period when the boy was aged 14 – 16, the court heard.

Another boy, the same age, was continually asked by O’Shea to send images of his penis via Snapchat and Facebook messenger.

That boy was given money by O’Shea who said he did so because he “loved ya”.

The court heard O’Shea sent an image of himself naked in a bathroom with his penis exposed to a third boy via Snapchat.

The child believed he was not the intended recipient but was wrong.

“Nah it was for u I think you should show me yours now,” O’Shea texted in response before being blocked by the boy.

Prosecutors previously told the court O’Shea’s offending, beginning in 2012, was “targeted, predatory and persistent”.

O’Shea leaves the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court at an earlier hearing in May.

The ex-teacher is facing an additional indecent assault charge which relates to him “spooning and positioning his penis” against a victim’s back.

O’Shea’s defence team said he suppressed his homosexuality since he was young and offended while intoxicated.

“In an intoxicated state, it was something he thought he could do. When he was sober he had a completely different view,” his lawyer previously told the court.

A psychologist report found O’Shea was at a moderate risk of reoffending and that he may be under-reporting his attraction to young people.

His lawyer said ongoing sobriety was needed to reduce his risk of reoffending.

“The goal is to be abstinent from drinking,” he said.

Prosecutors previously argued that O’Shea be jailed for his crimes.

However his defence team said a prison term would be “excessive” and that he was already facing a future as a mandatory lifetime sex offender.

Judge Stewart Bayles indicated that O’Shea would not receive a term of imprisonment.

He said the man had no priors, was relatively young at the time of offending, is remorseful for his actions and is prepared to engage in treatment.

O’Shea, who pleaded guilty to 13 charges, will return to court on September 25.
