The Herald Sun has been told Jamie Bogovic launched an unprovoked attack on the worker and a colleague at Barwon Prison, near Geelong, on Monday.

Sources say the victim was knocked out after taking “multiple blows” to the head in the jail’s Melaleuca unit.

The officer was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering a broken nose, dislocated jaw, cuts and severe bruising, a spokesman for the Community and Public Sector Union said.

He has since undergone surgery.

The other officer suffered less serious injuries.

A court heard in 2015 that Bogovic, then aged 27, was hand-picked by fight game great Jeff Fenech and, to that point, had won all of his six bouts.

His ring motto was “train hard and win easy”.

But his career crashed when, during a break from training, he started to use ice.

Bogovic had been facing court after two years on the run over a range of charges which ultimately had him jailed for three months.

In one case, the court heard he had posed as a private investigator in an attempt to defraud two people at Sandhurst.

When he was exposed, he assaulted them, a police prosecutor said.

Bogovic was also charged with having dental veneer work done then skipping without paying the $400 fee.

There were other charged related to incidents of shop-stealing and petrol drive-offs.

Along with the prison term, Bogovic was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work and submit to judicial monitoring as part of a 12-month community corrections order.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman confirmed two officers had received medical attention after an incident.

“The safety and security of our correctional officers is our top priority – any act of violence against our hardworking team is treated seriously and referred to Victoria Police,” she said.

The Community and Public Sector Union said this did not appear to be the case and that no one from the department had been in touch with the hospitalised man since the incident.

The CPSU spokesman described the attack as “vicious”.

Barwon is the state’s highest security prison and houses some of Victoria’s most dangerous criminals. Among them are killers, bikies, gangland figures and high-level drug traffickers.
